Working with an Interior Designer

THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH AN INTERIOR DESIGNER
Working with a designer is an investment in your home that SAVES you money. Not only do you avoid costly mistakes (“that sofa was WAY too big when we got it into our family room”), but, most importantly, you get the full ”WOW” impact that you hoped for when you started to plan your remodel or refurnishing project. A designer knows what it will look like before it comes together, is there to save you time, will make sure you spend your budget wisely, will educate you and  expand the horizon of your possibilities. As the cliché goes, they make your dreams a reality.

As I said, working with a designer should be FUN. My approach is collaborative. I want to know about you, how your life works around your family, how you entertain, your preferred styles, your budget. I welcome your input in all ways.  I do a preliminary NEEDS ASSESSMENT  for your project and customize a concept for you based on what we discuss.

I’m flexible in the manner and number of hours we work together, depending on the amount of time and experience you bring to the project. Some of my clients want a complete turn-key project. Some clients have the availability and energy to be highly involved in the research and selection; many like to do some legwork, or accompany me on research outings. And for other, I can simply be available to consult on an hourly ‘do-it-yourself’ budget. We discuss all of this in advance. I have an established network of experienced professional contractors and tradesmen and am happy to share them with you.

Some clients have the time and energy to be highly involved in the research and selection, some may not require that I  be as involved in the initial selection, but want my help with the editing and final decisions. Some of my clients want a complete turn-key project, many like to do some legwork, or accompany me on research outings, and for others I can simply be available to consult on an hourly do-it-yourself budget. We discuss all of this. I have a network of experienced professional contractors and tradesmen that I’ve been working with for many years and am happy to share them with you.

ADDITIONS, REMODEL, AND NEW CONSTRUCTION
I am your representative with the contractor and architect. It’s important to put together a strong and professional working team from the beginning. Harmonious working relationships and a structured flow of communication build trust, so your job runs more smoothly. Plan to attend regular meetings with the designer, contractor and architect (if involved).  I work on an hourly retainer basis, rather than a pre-determined job price. This is the most transparent way to work– the client has more control over their budget, and it is fair to my firm. Unanticipated changes always come up, either from what we discover at the jobsite, or from the client.

INTERIOR FURNISHINGS AND DESIGN
The selection of furnishings and accessories provides the most personal touches to your home. I have over 200 furnishing resources that I choose from for all phases of your interior project. I can also work with custom design manufacturers to create truly unique pieces for you.

I work on a retainer basis for the concept development, space planning, research, selection, order process and installation. The length of time it takes to reach our goal depends on three things:
1. Your decision-making style
2. How firm or evolving your ideas are
3. How easily your budget matches the readily available product lines

Once the selections are made, the order is placed with a deposit to the manufacturer. It is not unusual for custom furniture to take 10-12 weeks to arrive, so plan carefully if you have a hard deadline for completion. Whenever possible, I prefer to install a complete room-- the transformative “Ta DAAA!” moment is a lot of fun.
